Winter Storm Warning Issued For Morris County: The Township Of Parsippany – Troy Hills Is Ready

Posted January 05, 2024

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Winter Storm Warning in effect from 1 p.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday for our area. The forecast is subject to change quickly but currently calling for heavy snow with accumulations of 4 to 8 inches expected.

With the winter season upon us and with the potential for Parsippany to receive measurable snow for the for the first time in two years, Mayor James R. Barberio and the Township of Parsippany proudly announce its comprehensive snow preparedness plan to ensure the safety and convenience of its residents. In response to anticipated snowfall this weekend and throughout the season, the Township assures the public that it is well-equipped and ready to tackle winter weather challenges.

Mayor James R. Barberio expressed his confidence in the Township's snow preparedness, stating, "Our dedicated team in the Department of Public Works and Office of Emergency Management is thoroughly prepared for winter weather.”

“All of our plows and deicing equipment has been inspected and ready to safeguard the well-being of our residents. We are fully prepared to tackle any winter weather challenges that may come our way," said Mayor Barberio.

The Township is encouraging residents to exercise extreme caution when traveling and be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility. It is essential to adhere to all snow parking regulations. Residents are reminded that parking on snow-covered streets is prohibited. Vehicles parked too close to the corner can deter visibility for oncoming motorists and create hazardous driving conditions.

Please be reminded that sidewalks are homeowners’ responsibility and should be cleared within 24 hours. As the storm progresses, residents are asked NOT to shovel snow into the street. Business owners are required to shovel snow from in front of their properties within 24 hours of the snow stopping, while residents have up to eight hours. Residents can greatly assist the Fire Districts and DPW by clearing out snow blocked fire hydrants and storm drains near their home.

The comprehensive plan includes the following elements:

Miles of Roads Maintained: Approximately 210 miles of roads will be diligently maintained to keep the community safe and accessible.

Snow Plows: A robust fleet of 140 snow plows stands ready to clear roads efficiently and effectively. With a dedicated team of 140 experienced plow truck drivers, the Township is prepared to respond promptly to snow and ice accumulation. Plowing will begin when snow depths reach two inches and freezing temperatures indicate no melting.

Salt Spreaders: A total of 30 salt spreaders are strategically positioned to disperse salt and combat icy conditions.

Salt Inventory: Approximately 400 tons of salt remain from last year, with plans to purchase 3500 to 4000 tons this year based on storm predictions.

Salt/ Calcium Chloride Routine: The Township anticipates using 2,500 to 3,000 gallons of calcium chloride based on storm severity, temperature, and weather conditions.

The snow management team will initiate salting when precipitation begins, focusing on higher elevations. Salting will continue until snow buildup, at which point plowing takes precedence. Resumption of salting occurs after snow removal, with calcium chloride utilized in sub-freezing temperatures (mid-20s) to enhance snow and ice melting.

Jim Walsh, Public Works Director, emphasized the commitment of his team, saying, "The Township's Public Works Department is ready and well-equipped to handle snow and ice removal. Our priority is to ensure the safety and accessibility of our roadways for the community we serve."

The Township of Parsippany remains steadfast in its dedication to the safety and well-being of its community, demonstrating resilience and preparedness for whatever winter may bring. Please remain off the roads if possible so that first responders and public safety officials can safely respond to emergency situations. Please ensure that parked vehicles are not within 15 feet of crosswalks and intersections so emergency vehicles are able to pass without difficulty.
