Important Information to Know About Parsippany's Water System

Posted January 27, 2026
The Township’s water distribution system is made up of an interconnected network of pipes that include large transmission mains that feed smaller distribution mains and service lines. A series of valves throughout the Township’s system controls flow while pressure is maintained from the water stored in tanks and towers. Water pumping stations operate continuously to move water throughout the Township’s various pressure gradients. With so much complexity and so many pipes working to serve our communities, water main breaks can happen anywhere and at any time.

Why do water mains break?  Water main breaks happen for a number of different reasons:

  • Pipe age and material – Cast iron can be brittle and does not expand and contract easily with temperature changes.
  • Pressure changes – The pressure inside a water main can change. One of the most commons ways is through temperature changes or thermal expansion. Pressure changes can also occur when fire hydrants are either opened or closed too quickly causing a water hammer.
  • Ground settling – Over time, as the soil around a water main settles it can stress the pipe and break.
  • Corrosive soils – Some soils are corrosive and can eat away at pipes over time. This is especially common in iron and other metal pipes. Eventually the corrosion causes the pipe to break.
Water main breaks are significantly more prevalent in the winter often increasing by 50% or more, primarily due to freezing temperatures which causes soil to shift and frost to penetrate deep into the ground. This frozen, moving soil puts immense pressure on pipes, while colder water causes metal pipes to contract, become brittle and crack.

Key factors behind increased winter breaks:
  • Frozen ground and pressure
  • Thermal contraction
  • Freeze-thaw cycles
  • Colder water temperature
Rest assured that the Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills Water Department is well-equipped to respond to emergencies 24/7/365. To report a leak or if you believe you are being affected by a water main break and have any questions please contact the Water Department at 973-263-7099. The Township will continue to post updates on social media.
