OPEN POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
EQUIPMENT OPERATOR/WATER REPAIRER – GRADE H5

Department: Water Department

Workweek:   Monday through Friday 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Must be available to work emergency and non-emergency overtime hours,
                       including weekends and holidays. Must have a mobile phone at which he/she can be contacted.

Wage:             Per ordinance, non-exempt blue-collar Grade H5.  Excellent benefits package provided.

Definition:      Under direction, operates various types of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment to perform assignments to push, pull,
                         pile, lift and load materials; clears brush and debris; excavates trenches safely to facilitate repairs to pipe, valves,
                         hydrants and services; inspects equipment daily and lubricates/oils equipment.  Performs the more difficult and
                         responsible work involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of water mains, valves, hydrants and services;
                         does other related duties.

Skills / Duties: Operates equipment such as front-end loaders, combination backhoes, track excavators and utilizes manipulative
                          control equipment to excavate trenches to facilitate repairs and new installation.  Smooths surfaces, repairs small
                          bumps and fill holes. Ensures that equipment is ready for operation at all times by inspecting/lubricating moving parts,
                          inspecting tires for proper inflation, checking hydraulic fluid and conducting a general inspection of equipment.  Drives
                          and operates dump trucks.  Installs, maintains and repairs water mains, pipes, valves, hydrants, and services.
                          Disassembles fire hydrants, removes defective parts, install new parts and reassembles fire hydrants.  Replaces water
                          valves.  Operates an air compressor and pneumatic drill or other equipment.  Digs trenches to remove defective pipes
                           and to install new pipes and main.  Loads and unloads material manually and/or with equipment.  Obtains, safeguards
                           and properly uses equipment, tools, materials and supplies.  Performs inspections and oversees construction.  Performs
                           and witnesses various testing (i.e., fire flow tests, hydrostatic pressure test, bacteriological test, etc.).  Locates curb
                           stop boxes, using electronic or magnetic device.  Locate customer service lines and water mains using electronic pipe
                           locating device.  Locates water leaks using leak locating equipment. Operates curb stop valves, inline gate valves and
                           fire hydrants.  Coordinates in the field, water system shutdowns between maintenance crews and private contractors.
                           Will be required to utilize various types of electronic and manual recording and information systems used by the Water
                           Utility.  Responds to after hour emergencies to investigate, report and make repairs. Record keeping and reporting.
                            Performs other duties as assigned.  Able to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English. Understand,
                            remember and carry out oral and written instructions.  Able to work for long periods in emergency situations and
                            remain until all repairs have been made.  The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only. All
                            duties performed on the job may not be listed. 
 

Requirements:  Four years minimum experience in the operation of construction equipment to excavate trenches for water utility
                           repairs and installation.  Two years minimum experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of water main,
                           valves, hydrants and services.  Candidate must possess a valid NJ Driver’s License and Commercial Driver’s License
                            (CDL) in good standing.  Must be able to drive a dump truck.  GED or High School diploma.
