Department of Public Works – Sanitation & Recycling, Streets & Roads and Parks & Forestry

LABORER–GRADE H2

Department: Public Works

Workweek: For the following positions:

Sanitation & Recycling: Monday through Friday 6:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Must be available to Work emergency and non-emergency overtime hours, including weekends and holidays. Must have a telephone at which he/she can be contacted.

Streets & Roads: Monday through Friday 7:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Must be available to work 24/7, emergency and non-emergency overtime hours, including weekends and holidays. Must have a telephone at which he/she can be contacted.

Parks & Forestry: Monday through Friday. 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Must be able to be contacted  by phone and available to work emergency and non-emergency overtime hours, including weekends, holidays, mandatory at times

Wage: Per Ordinance – Blue Collar Union Employee, Non-Exempt, Overtime Work

Skills / Duties: Under direction, these positions perform varied types of manual and unskilled labor. Performs heavy manual labor for prolonged periods of time under varying temperatures and climatic conditions. Duties for these positions will include, but are not limited to, for the Divisions listed:

Sanitation & Recycling: Collects rubbish and other refuse.  Lifts filled refuse cans to truck, empties can into truck and redeposits cans at the curb. Operates mechanisms at the rear of truck.

Streets & Roads: Digging trenches, manual grading, lifting, loading, moving of objects, shoveling gravel and sand, assisting with mixing cement and mortar, placement of forms used in concrete work, and cold patching.

Parks & Forestry: Cuts grass, trims hedges, waters lawns, flowers, shovels snow, digs out stumps of trees, poisonous vines, weeds and undergrowth loads debris into truck for removal,

Able to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English. Understand, remember and carry out oral and written instructions.

Able to drive a truck. Possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtains one before the expiration of probationary period (90 days).

Must be available for emergencies 24 hours a day and have a telephone available on which he or she can be contacted.

Education, Experience and Licenses: G.E.D. or Highschool Diploma
